No to Willpower; Yes to the Power of Your Own Will

You have happiness within you right now.  Being happy isn’t this elusive state that has to happen to you.  It is there and has been all along.  Many of us think that when we lose weight, we’ll be happy.  Then, if we don’t lose weight, we aren’t happy.  Happiness isn’t dependent on what we weigh.  Happiness is a state of mind, not a way of life or a destination that you’ll eventually get to.

As I grew up, no one told me that I wouldn’t be happy all the time.  I know that sounds simplistic but I’ve thought that I should be happy all the time.  Not only is that not possible but it isn’t healthy.  Even nature knows that – look at a rose.  The bloom is beautiful but has thorns.  Bumps in the road of our life are to be expected, and we can’t let them ruin our lives.  You can’t appreciate the beauty of your life without some speed bumps and detours along the way.  You can’t have a rainbow without the rain.  Same way with our lives.

If you’re battling grazing, head hunger or heart hunger, don’t turn to food to numb out and eat your way through life.  Remember, “this too shall pass” and you don’t have to succumb to the exterior trappings of emotional eating resulting in excess weight.  Build your eating in control muscle by passing on the cravings to turn to food to cope.  What you are looking for isn’t in a bag of cookies or chips, it is inside of you.  All you have to do is turn to your inner wealth of happiness rather than turn to food.

Happiness isn’t outside of you in a new job, new home, a vacation, new car or a certain balance in your checking account.  You won’t find happiness outside of yourself.  Happiness is inside of you.  All you need to do is tap into it and focus on the blessings of your life that we all have.

We often believe that if a combination of factors would just fall into place perfectly then we’ll finally be happy.  Happiness comes from within each of us through accepting ourselves just as we are, our circumstances, and your life.  Just as there are difficult days that include worry, disappointments, frustrations, etc., there are also days that are filled with joy, fun, successes and happiness.

Willpower doesn’t work; using the power of your own will does.
