You’ve Come Very Far!
Before you had surgery and lost weight, there was a time when you could not do many of the things that you can now. Take long walks or use the stairs without becoming winded to the point that you can’t breathe, sit in a movie theater or airplane seat comfortably, sit at a booth in a restaurant that wait for a table to become available, and many other accomplishments you’ve attained by losing weight. You’ve learned, and now those accomplishments that once were out of reach and impossible are now second nature. You don’t think a thing about them.
There was a time when you felt uncomfortable in new situations, relationships or in new places. Now, after losing weight, you feel more comfortable with those same people, relationships, situations and in new places. You are more confident and self-assured. The excess weight doesn’t hold you back in allowing you to put yourself out into the world.
Now that you’ve lost weight or in the process of losing weight, reflect back and appreciate how far you’ve come. Think of the things that held you back, you isolated in guilt and shame over your body size and weight, and how you felt about yourself and your life. Now, fast forward and look at you today!!! Wow! There was a time that you couldn’t imagine your life as a thinner, normal sized person. More importantly, you feel awesome about yourself, your accomplishments and successes that you’ve attained.
You may not yet be where you truly want to be. You may want to lose more weight, lose regained weight, or have plastic surgery to remove the excess skin from your weight loss. However, you have come such a long way to be there you are today. The knowledge, the experiences, the strength you already have is more than enough to move you forward today and in the future to where you want to be.
What prompted me to write this post is because many times my clients (and me!) focus on what more we need to do. Hey, wait a minute. Focus on what you’ve done. Celebrate what you’ve done, how far you’ve come and what you have accomplished. Okay, maybe you have 50 more pounds to go but you’ve lost 120 pounds! Maybe you got to your goal weight but regained 40 pounds. Okay, you can lose it but of the 40 pounds, you still lost 100 pounds. Don’t have tunnel vision to focus and zero in on what you have left to do. Zoom out and celebrate, acknowledge and recognize how far you’ve come. Woo Hoo!! Celebrate YOU!
