Your Self-Appointment

Are you waiting for someone externally to validate or appoint you to do anything and realize that you can easily appoint yourself to get the results you want. If you realize that everything that is priceless is already inside of you and not on any or multiple certificates or diplomas.

The more things we have in our control, the more empowered we are. And typically, we find ourselves more fulfilled too.  We can begin to control more things in our lives. And one of those is the notion of being certified, degreed, appointed, etc. by external sources. Sure, we need appointment for some things. I like my doctor to have passed exams and be board certified before he or she operates on me. I like my airplane pilots to have licenses before flying me around.  I am a firm believer in a certified professional life coach through a training program accredited through the International Coach Federation.

However, we often are conditioned to live in the trance that says we have to be externally appointed, certified, or given some recognition before we can do something. This is NOT true. Think about Edison, the great inventor. He didn’t get an inventor’s degree or certificate and then go on to become the world’s greatest inventor. He just did it. He did what came natural to him.

Think about Bill Gates. He didn’t hang out in school waiting to get a degree saying he was an expert in computers before starting his company. He dropped out of college, completely went for his dream with all he had, and now is one of the richest man around. Who knows if opportunity had slipped him by if he had stayed in school, waiting to be externally appointed as an expert?

Take Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player ever. He didn’t wait for others to externally designate him as a great basketball player and then go out and allow his greatness to come out. Not even close! He declared in his mind (e.g., self-appointed) that he was going to be great and worked hard to unleash his greatness within. It was up to him. Remember, Jordan got cut in the 8th grade from his basketball team. Had he bought into the idea of an external personal judging his worthiness, he probably would’ve given up and the world would have lost out on the best basketball player ever. He didn’t buy into that junk hypnosis of someone else deciding, dictating his fate for him.

From a personal experience in junior high, I got cut from cheerleading tryouts.  I practiced cheerleading practically every waking moment.  I got cut from cheerleading tryouts and was devestated.  All my good friends made the cheerleader squad. I felt bad back then. I bought into the jteacher’s judgment of my ability. I quit cheerleading and deemed that I couldn’t do it.  Who would’ve known what would have happened if I had not quit or made a different meaning from the teacher? Was she the ultimate authority?  No.  She was a social studies teacher.  I’m not suggesting I would have been in the Cheerleading Championship yet I bet I could have practiced more make the cheerleading squad. Instead, I believed, “The teacher is an absolute authority so I’m buying into her judgment (perceived on my part) that I suck as a cheerleader and gave up something I truly loved.  With a different reframe on that situation, it would’ve given me better results and probably much more accurate in “The teacher thought I didn’t do something in my tryout, I’ll find out what it is and practice even more.  I need to practice more to incorporate what the teacher was looking for to show in tryouts that I’m the real deal.” Alright, enough of me reliving my junior high challenges.

The point is that to do something, you don’t have to wait on someone else to certify you, appoint you, give you a degree, say you’re great or that you can do it, etc. Designate yourself. Here’s what I’m going to do for you. You no longer need anyone’s permission to go for it. And when you’re doing all sorts of great things, showing the true greatness within yourself, some people might ask, “Hey, what’s gotten into you? Who gave you the right to do all this great stuff?” And when they do, say, “I did.” After all, it is all inside you!
